One of my favorite events each year, The Bigger Picture Show is a great night of celebrating design and film. It's a great chance to work in whatever style I want and be truly free to create. I'm honored to continue being invited and happy to help raise some funds for the Indy Film Fest.
I’ve always loved Star Wars and one of the best things about this franchise is the world that exists beyond the movies built by fans. The font used for the letterforms at the top was created by fans in the 90s. It was a really fun detail to work with on this poster. The top left are “numbers” for 1977, the year the film was released and the other letters read “Rebel With a Cause”.
Rewatching and looking for details is one of my favorite parts of the process in looking for a unique angle to envision a poster. I really connected with the scene in 127 Hours where Aron Ralston calmly lays out what he has to assess what he can use to survive and look for a solution. This poster became a visual scavenger hunt to nail the details. The most delightful surprise was finding that Patio chicken burritos are not only still available but the packaging hasn't changed a bit. While doing research I also ended up seeing a lot of ads for Utah tourism and ad a last minute idea that it would be darkly humorous to position this as one of those ads.
For 2020, the directive was to highlight specific locations from a film. I had recently gotten into collecting matchbooks from places around Indianapolis and loved the idea of how matchbooks can provide this incredible sense of nostalgia and become a physical tie to a location in such a unique way. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is my all-time favorite movie and it was a lot of fun to imagine what a matchbook from The Hotel Citroen might look like had it been a prop on set.
Even as it ushered in the Pierce Brosnan era of Bond and had some pretty amazing stunts, the only reason anyone really remembers GoldenEye was for the groundbreaking, world-changing N64 video game. I acquired an N64 controller from a friend, painted it gold and then wrangled some photographer friends to produce a ridiculously overworked lighting setup. Worth it.
Notorious - recreated Biggie's epic floral arrangement from his funeral procession by hand before photographing for the poster.
I also spent a lot of time at Hobby Lobby
Rain Man - imagined what if each character was illustrated in the style of playing cards
Eyes Wide Shut - There is an interesting balance of elegance and ugliness in this film. I felt like working by hand with ink and watercolor would fit that feeling.
Black Swan
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - the theme for this year was character portraits
